When missionaries reached
to view areas, one of the first things they did was to start
schools in remote villages. Classes were conducted under the
trees and on house verandas. Education over the years has by
and large succeeded to reduce illiteracy, superstitions and
ignorance of modern medicines. They kept on adding more and
more schools and hostels as the number of mission stations
increased. Every mission station/parish has a school and
boarding for both girls and boys. At present there are 74
schools out of which 25 are High schools having study
facilities up to Class X and 49 are
Middle schools. There are about 55000 children
studying in our schools and 10282 poor and orphan children
living in our hostels. About 1200 teachers are employed
to teach these children. We have also sponsorship programme
for a number of poor and needy children. Through this
programme these children are provided food, medicines, books,
clothing, family help, making houses for poor people, and
Christian formation. We are happy to share with you that 8036
children are being sponsored by sponsors from U.S.A. Through
the Christian Foundation for Children and Ageing based at
Kansas City. We are grateful to the Sponsors and the
Organization for the support given to our many children and
their families.
Apart from the formal educational institutions which are
popular and in great demand, the diocese has also a chain of
Non-Formal Schools. These schools cater to the hundreds of
children and adults who are not fortunate enough to go to
formal schools, or those who have dropped out from schools
owing to some reason or other. |
