The Diocese of Bhagalpur, from its inception in 1965
until now, has achieved many things in various areas of development
spiritual and material. The Lord's work is going on and will go on.
With the good response of our people, a number of new mission
centers are being developed by building up churches, schools,
hostels, dispensaries, convents, priests' residence etc., in remote
areas of the diocese.
The people are economically poor. Land is unfertile. We have often
irregular monsoons and insufficient water and often crop failure.
Agriculture is not mechanized. People are victims of Tuberculosis,
Kalajar and Malaria, the killer disease when they take the form of
cerebral malaria. Santals are deprived of government schemes because
they are unaware of it and other literate and affluent members of
the society take advantage of government schemes and helps even at
the expense of these simple people. They live still in their
traditional mud house with thatched roofs. They believe in
superstition. When they are sick, faced with problems, during
natural calamities, they turn to magicians and spend exorbitant
amount of money in animal sacrifices. They are still happy with the
village quacks. Good many of them still do not seek help from our
dispensaries and hospitals. Transportation and communication system
is almost nil in villages. Roads are bad. Yes, we have to reach out
to these people to help them come out of the clutches of
superstitions and black magic, poverty illness and ignorance to the
mainstream of the society. Our Priests and sisters together with the
educated of the society are doing much. They need financial help to
reach out to the people in remote villages to build up new missions,
to treat the sick and downtrodden, to support the hungry and
marginally poor of the society. We look to you for support, both
spiritual and material to make these people some one for God and
Nation.
The
Diocese of Bhagalpur is actively engaged in the following areas for
the betterment of people, society and nation :
